High School Opportunities

The Institute of Arctic Studies at Dartmouth College facilitates a polar science program for high school juniors called the Joint Science Education Project (JSEP). JSEP travels to Greenland for 3-weeks typically in the last week of June through mid-July. JSEP is supported by a National Science Foundation grant to Dartmouth College. Travel, lodging and meals are provided at no cost to selected students. The JSEP Program targets students who have a passion for learning, strong interest in science and openness to other cultures. JSEP has proven to be a life-changing experience for selected students in previous years. We hope you will assist us in identifying talented candidates from your school and encourage them to apply. The program offers field-based learning and unique cultural experiences!

The 7-week KEYS Internship program is a unique summer opportunity for motivated high school students with a strong interest in bioscience, engineering, environmental health, or biostatistics.

Syracuse University's Liberal Arts & Sciences program is especially valuable for those science-minded students who are considering a college career in the well-rounded world of the liberal arts. In this six-week program, students enroll in their choice of two regular undergraduate courses in the subjects of Psychology, Sociology, Philosophy, Math, Earth Science, and Economics. Especially interesting science-themed courses include Stars, Galaxies, and the Universe; Oceanography; and a Forensic Science Lab; among many others.

The Maine Sea Grant education program seeks to improve marine-related K-16 educational opportunities in the state, as well as continued learning programs for educators. The program offers in-service teacher training workshops, develops formal and informal education programs related to the National Sea Grant Network's four focus areas,* and develops curriculum materials that are aligned with state and national education standards.

High school students who love research and the sciences will love University of Michigan's Math and Science Scholars summer science program. The two-week course aims to encourage the next generation of research scientists by assisting them in hands-on research projects. A number of fascinating courses are available in each of the following subjects: anthropology, art, astronomy, biology, chemistry, computer science, mathematics, physics, environmental studies, psychology, and statistics.

The MSP assists students at middle and senior high schools (and some elementary schools) so they excel in math and science and become competitively eligible for academically rigorous colleges and universities. The MSP partners with teachers, administrators, school district officials, schools and industry representatives to provide quality academic enrichment . Student selection and services are implemented through a collaboration involving teachers at participating schools and personnel from local MESA centers.
