Tufts University's Health Science Honors program is a six-week course designed to provide students with an introduction to the philosophy and practice of medicine. This program is not residential, and students meet twice weekly on the Tufts campus for lectures on physiology and anatomy, plus hands-on laboratory activities. The goal of HiSTEP is to expand the pipeline of students interested in biomedical and healthcare careers by expanding opportunities for high school students from schools with a large population of financially-disadvantaged students. Our high school summer research fellowship program is highly competitive. We welcome applicants who desire hands-on, research training experience in biomedical sciences. Each high school student is mentored by an MDI Biological Laboratory researcher or visiting scientist. A co-curricular program helps students develop professional skills and foster connections within the scientific research community. Applicants from under-served populations are encouraged to apply. Summer high school research fellows live on campus in a structured and supervised living-learning environment. They are provided with on-campus dormitory style accommodations, full meal plans in the MDI Biological Laboratory dining hall, and a stipend. Travel is not funded. Dormitories are supervised by live-in residential advisors. Students must be nominated by a science teacher or guidance counselor to apply to this program. A completed nomination form must be received and approved by the Education Office prior to any student application activity. Approved nominees will be invited to submit a full application.

Stanford University, located in the San Francisco Bay Area, invites high school students to choose from more than 140 courses during its summer quarter. This opportunity, called the High School Summer College, is an intensive and selective eight-week program meant to provide high-achieving students with a realistic taste of college at a top university. Not only do participants take the same courses as Stanford undergrads, but they are also able to learn from actual Stanford professors, and are even matriculated as Stanford students. What an opportunity!

Washington University in St. Louis's High School Summer Scholars Program is a prestigious program in which students have the opportunity to study a variety of courses right alongside undergraduate students. During their chosen session (there are three, ranging from five to eight weeks in length), students live on campus in residence halls, participate in specialized seminars and a variety of social events, and are even made part of an academic support group. Course options are extensive, but science-themed courses include Geology of National Parks, Introduction to Psychology, General Chemistry, Introduction to Anatomy and Physiology, and much more.
