High School Opportunities

Generous need-based no cost participation in the Summer Scholars Program located at several campuses, including U of Colorado, New Mexico Tech, Purdue, and Indiana U. This prestigious pre-college summer science program (co-sponsored by MIT, University of Colorado Boulder (pictured), Caltech, and New Mexico Institute of Technology) provides students with the opportunity to immerse themselves in a central research project in either astrophysics or biochemistry. In the astrophysics program, teams observe various astronomical patterns to determine the orbit of a near-earth asteroid, while in the biochemistry program, teams design a small molecule that can inhibit an enzyme from a fungal crop pathogen. SSP is a residential immersion into experimental science, designed to challenge and inspire talented rising seniors from around the world. Working in teams of three, participants complete a research project from beginning to end: either in Astrophysics, near-earth asteroid imaging and orbit determination, or Biochemistry, fungal enzyme inhibition and drug discovery. Each team acquires its own original data and performs its own analysis. Field trips and guest speakers round out an intense 39-day schedule.

The Jackson Laboratory Summer Student Program is designed for students who want to immerse themselves in genetics and genomics research. It emphasizes laboratory discovery, communication of knowledge, and professional growth.

The Summer@Brown pre-college summer program is a unique opportunity for students to experience life on an Ivy League campus while immersing themselves in subjects they love, all without the stress of grades and credits. Students participating in the program will live on campus, take part in a full calendar of campus events and activities, and choose from more than 200 non-credit courses. Examples of science-themed courses available include Live Like it's 3000 BC: Introduction to Experimental Archaeology; Understanding Illness: Ethnography, Narrative, and Graphic Medicine; and Introduction to Medicine: Do You Want to Be a Doctor?, among many others.

Davidson College, one of the top liberal arts schools in the country, offers high school students an opportunity to spend most of the month of July on the Davidson campus to experience life as a college student while padding their college application with courses from a school like Davidson. Science-themed classes include Three Pounds, One Quadrillion Synapses: Discovering the Frontiers of Neuroscience; and What is Race/Gender/Sexuality?; among others.

The Mitchell Institute unlocks the potential of Maine college students so they can contribute to the vitality of their communities. We award scholarships each year to graduating students from Maine's public high schools as they pursue higher education.

The Rensselaer PREFACE Program is a two-week residential summer experience for talented high school sophomores and juniors, who will enter 11th or 12th grade in the fall of the coming year and who have expressed a strong, early interest in pursuing a career in the engineering and technological professions. It is for serious high school students from groups that have been historically and traditionally underrepresented or underserved in science, engineering, and technological fields.

The STEM Scholars program is pleased to announce a limited number of research internship positions available to qualified students. If you are a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, or Math) student with a 2.75 GPA or better, AND made a B- or better in your last majors lab science class (no non-majors science electives meet this requirement), then you qualify. You will be joining an ongoing research project and learning how to think like a scientist, work as part of a team, and become a better critical thinker, and have fun doing it!

The University of Chicago has been called one of the top ten universities in the world, so you can be sure their pre-college summer programs are some of the best available. In UChicago Immersion, students dive into life on the Chicago campus. They take an actual undergraduate-level course, receive personalized attention from faculty members, and participate in labs and other hands-on activities. Course options include Biotechnology for the 21st Century, Contagion: Infectious Agents and Emerging Diseases, and The Physics of Stars, among others.

C-STEM Awards and Scholarships are presented to K-12 students for their aspiration and excellent achievement on integrated learning of computing and STEM subjects in both formal and informal settings. Award recipients are selected by the C-STEM Awards Committee consisting of the university faculty, graduate students, and undergraduate students.
