Mentorship Initiative (GSMI)
We run the Graduate School Mentorship Initiative (GSMI) program with the mission to help graduate school applicants from low-income, first-generation, and underserved backgrounds navigate graduate school entry through graduate school preparation one-on-one guidance from a STEM mentor, financial assistance in the form of fee waivers and scholarships, access to educational curriculum, mock interviews, and access to a broader community of scientists
Thus far, we have supported 992 students with graduate school preparation and

Olamide Afolayan is a fourth year Biomedical Engineering major at Stony Brook University, where he’s also a part of the inaugural cohort of Simons STEM Scholars program. His interest in musculoskeletal tissue engineering, particularly meniscus repair, drives him to pursue a Ph.D in Biomedical Engineering to advance strategies to engineer stronger replacements for tendons and ligaments.

As an African-American male, he is eager to promote and advocate for diversity in complex scientific environments, both within and beyond academia.
